When your gums become affected by the bacteria and acids in dental plaque and tartar, with results that range from irritation to infection, you are dealing with
gum disease 12208. At Barats Family Dentistry, we feel that the more you know about it, the better equipped you will be to prevent it and to recognize the signs of it when it does occur.
The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. Redness and irritation are usually mild, and you may not even be aware that anything is wrong. Many times, gingivitis is diagnosed during a twice per year visit for an oral examination. And it is convenient that a teeth cleaning is part of that visit, because the way to reverse the effects of gingivitis is with a cleaning. If you were to skip or postpone your six month session at our office, that would give
gum disease 12208 the chance to progress to an advanced stage, periodontitis. It's also possible that underlying issues, like diabetes, could end up accelerating the path to periodontitis. You should be on the lookout for symptoms such as bleeding when you brush, ongoing bad breath, and receding gums. But what's going on that you can't see is even more crucial. Your gum and bone tissue may be eroding, inflammation and infection could be setting in, and your teeth may eventually become loose due to your gums no longer being the dependable foundation that they're supposed to be. Treatment of periodontitis is also done with a cleaning, but it's called root scaling and planing, and it's deeper, getting right down to the roots. In severe or recurring cases, gum surgery might be recommended.
Why risk the problems that
gum disease 12208 brings with it? Contact our office right now and schedule an appointment to come in for an examination and cleaning.
